Amalaki, commonly known as Indian Gooseberry or Amla, is a powerhouse of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, tannins, flavonoids, anti-oxidants and other chemical compounds. It exhibits all the five “rasas” or tastes , due to which Ayurveda regards it of utmost importance for maintaining optimal health. It is both a food and medicine.
Amalaki’s botanical name is Emblica Officinalis or Phyllanthus Emblica. It is a middle sized deciduous tree with green globose fruits found wild throughout tropical India.
While dried and fresh fruit of Amalaki is used commonly, Ayurveda also uses its seeds, bark, roots, leaves and flowers. It can be consumed both internally and externally. Ayurveda prescribes amlaki for internal consumption to treat several diseases and build immunity. However, as it is hair and skin friendly, its is beneficial when applied externally too.
Lets look at some of the benefits of applying amla externally on our skin and hair:
- Due its anti-oxidant properties and concentration of vitamin C, Amlaki provides protection to skin and hair from heat, light and pollutants.
- Its conditioning properties helps in maintaining skin texture and youthfulness.
- Due to its cooling properties, it helps in preventing boils, acne and eruptions on skin and scalp.
- It also helps in controlling excessive oil on the skin due to its astringent properties.
- It is also known for its wound healing properties when applied externally to cuts, bruises and wounds.
- Massaging the scalp with amla oil strengthens the follicles and provides luster and Vitamin C in it prevents premature graying.
- Regular application of amla oil serves as a conditioner and helps in strengthening the hair.
